Brian Burke was fired as General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier today. I’m still just as stunned as Dave Nonis appeared at the subsequent press conference. My feelings of Brian Burke are truly mixed. Was I thrilled about the way the club was run? No. Did he make some really stupid moves? Yeah, but name a GM that hasn’t faltered. I’m most baffled by the fact that they did this now. WHY NOW and not after the Leafs fell off the cliff? I’m not going to speculate as to the real reason this happened today but MLSE in true MLSE fashion failed to divulge details (to the media, who owns them) surrounding this abrupt move. The media’s relationship with MLSE is one that will become more complicated as time progresses and I can’t wait to see that shit show unravel.
Although fans generally seem happy about this move, I would have liked to have him around at least until the end of the season. Rebuilds take time. Sure, Alex Anthopolous did it in like 3 years, but that’s baseball and it would be like comparing apples and oranges. The truth is, Brian Burke walked into a situation similar to Obama and America in that everything was totally fucked up when he got there and it wasn’t his fault. I believe that he always did what he thought was right for the organization and while the Kessel trade is a piss off for many Leafs fans (and hilarious for everyone else) it’s important to remember all the good he did for the team, players (gave Lupul his second chance) and the community. Most importantly, the community, and for that, I will always wish him well.
And now I have a message for MLSE
(They’re reading this, right?)
DO NOT TRADE JAKE GARDINER. Not for Roberto Luongo and not for anyone else. Doing so would be a huge mistake. He is the cornerstone of the teams D and should very much be considered the brightest spot in the teams future. I will never, ever forgive the organization if they throw away talent that Burke worked hard to obtain for a goalie with a short shelf life. You know what? I’m going to pull a Patrick Burke and not even think about what will come in the days, weeks, months and years ahead. NO MORE FUCKING UP, MLSE. Everyone knows which players Burkie liked but now that he’s gone, no one is untouchable, and this makes me nervous.
In the meantimes, the person responsible for this can chill out right about now.
